Indian cities dominate the list of the World’s Most Polluted Cities; transportation is the major cause.
IQAir, a Swiss Organization has prepared a report detailing the most polluted cities in the World. These cities are ranked according to data aggregated from over 80,000 data points over the course of one year.
This ranking report is based on PM2.5 data from 106 countries. The data is measured by ground-based monitoring stations, which are mostly operated by government agencies.
According to the reports, the number one most polluted city in the world is Hotan, China, which is followed by 13 Indian cities! There are 22 Indian cities in the Top 30 most polluted cities! This list is majorly dominated by Indian cities, Chinese cities, and Pakistani cities which should be a wake-up call for us to do something about it.
Some of these cities have shown improvement in this past year due to the pandemic and subsequent months-long lockdown. The air quality in Delhi improved by approximately 15% from 2019 to 2020. But in some cities, the air quality has degraded a lot, this includes Kanpur, Agra, Bulanshahr, and other cities.
Despite the improvements in the air quality, some cities are still at the top of this list. The report said, “India continues to feature prominently at the top of the most polluted cities ranking, with 22 of the top 30 most polluted cities globally.”
According to the CEO of IQAir, Frank Hammes, the year 2020 brought an unexpected dip in air pollution but in 2021, the pollution level will continue to increase due to human activity. “The transportation sector is one of the major contributors to India’s leading PM2.5 emission sources across cities,” the report said.
Air pollution is one of the major environmental threats to our atmosphere as well health. This report highlights the need to take urgent action necessary to combat air pollution and that it is possible to do so.
