The US state of Californian wildfire is facing devastating wildfires, it has been burning for weeks due to the two dozens fires across the state. And one of these fires was sparked by a firework device used during a gender revealing party, local officials have confirmed.
Gender reveal parties are elaborate gatherings where the expecting parents find out the gender of their baby. These parties have been trending in the past few years.
The El Dorado Fire, burning east of Los Angeles near Oak Glen in the San Bernandino area, was caused by a ‘fire-generating pyrotechnic device’, the California fire law enforcement said in a statement today.
California is recording the highest ever temperature the state has ever seen at 49.4C (121F). According to the National Weather Service, Sunday was “one of the hottest days since weather records began across much of south-western Californian wildfire”.
“The fire began at 10.23 am on September 5, 2020, in the El Dorado Ranch Park in Yucaipa,” the statement released on late Sunday night read.
“With the dry conditions and critical fire weather, it doesn’t take much to start a wildfire. Those responsible for starting fires due to negligence or illegal activity can be held financially and criminally responsible,” the statement said.
So far, the fire has burned over 7,000 acres of area which led to the evacuation of over 3,000 residents. Around 12,500 firefighters are currently battling dozens of fires across the state, according to Cal Fire Department Californian wildfire.
“Cal Fire reminds the public that with the dry conditions and critical fire weather, it doesn’t take much to start a wildfire”, the tweet read.
People who cause fires “can be held financially and criminally responsible”, it added.
There have been many accidents in the past pertaining to such gender-reveal parties. In April 2017, an off-duty US border patrol agent, Dennis Dickey fired a blue-colored explosive at a target in Arizona forest which caused $8m of damage.
In October 2019, in Iowa, while firing a home-made device meant to discharge colored powder, it exploded which resulted in the death of a woman.
Pacific Gas & Electric, the state’s largest utility, warned its customers of a possible power outage starting Tuesday because of expected high winds and heat.
On Sunday, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency due to the wildfires in five Californian counties: Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, San Bernardino, and San Diego.
